General Interstate Transport Rules

CVI / Health Certificate
A Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) is required for most interstate livestock and pet movement. CVIs must be issued by an accredited veterinarian and are typically valid for 30 days. Requirements vary by species, destination state, and whether animals are going to slaughter, shows, or private farms.

Many western states require brand inspection for cattle and horses crossing state lines. Brand inspection verifies ownership and is handled by the originating or destination state's livestock board. Brand inspection requirements differ significantly between states — check both the origin and destination requirements before hauling.

Certain species require additional documentation beyond a standard CVI. Swine often require pseudorabies and brucellosis status. Horses must frequently have an EIA (Coggins) test within 12 months.
